County approves permit for ministorage

A conditional-use permit allowing construction of a ministorage facility west of Lawrence was approved Wednesday by the Douglas County Commission.

The permit was sought by Souvenirs LLC, which owns the proposed storage site at the northwest corner of North 1415 and East 900 roads, near what is commonly called “Judy’s Junction.” It is near the former Clinton Cove convenience store.

Tim Herndon, a representative of Landplan Engineering who worked with the landowner in planning the development, asked commissioners to reduce the amount of landscaping the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission recommended as screening for the site.

Commissioners noted that while the Planning Commission is an advisory board, the landscaping requirement was approved in a 10-0 vote. They were reluctant to go against the recommendation.

A chain-link fence also will be built around the property.

A conditional-use permit is good for 10 years with a review after five years.
