Senior carry FSHS in swimming victory

Seniors were honored with parents at Free State High’s final home swim meet Tuesday, and they made their parents proud with stand-out performances in a 102-84 dual-meet victory against Shawnee Mission East.

Katie Swank led the way with first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Captain Whitley Jackson also had a memorable performance, setting personal records in the 200 free (2 minutes, 7.18 seconds, second place) and 100 backstroke (1:07.86, third). Captain Kacee Abel made strong contributions in a pair of relay races and Sarah Clark not only joined her sister, freshman Heather, on a relay, she also placed third in the 100 free.

Ayo AlstonMoore, after her final home meet, was cited by Firebirds coach Annette McDonald for “doing a really good job of improving.” Diving coach Casey Topol praised Carol Fittell, who placed first, and Kacey Clements, who was sixth, for executing some of their best dives.

Free State had season-best times in the 400 free and 200 free relays.

Freshman phenoms Morgan Flannigan and Heather Clark won two events apiece and each swam a leg of a relay team that logged a season-best time. Freshman Adriane Black and junior Katie Sloan also had strong days.

Free State’s next meet will beat 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Blue Valley West.
