Tax deadline set for Tuesday

Downtown post office to close at 7 p.m. with band welcoming last-minute filers

There’s an extra reprieve for everyone still waiting to file their 2007 income taxes: You have until the end of Tuesday to get either the paperwork in the mail or electronic forms transmitted online.

Because of Monday’s Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C., and a federal law that says holidays in the nation’s capitol have some effects on government agencies, taxes that would have been due Monday are now due a day later, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The traditional April 15 tax-filing deadline already would have been moved back a day this year because it falls on Sunday. The Kansas Department of Revenue also has modified its due date, making the deadline Tuesday for filing state taxes.

Lawrence’s downtown post office, 645 Vt., will close at 7 p.m. Tuesday, just as it did for tax day last year. The closest post office open until midnight is in Overland Park.

Dropping the midnight closing in Lawrence didn’t cause much trouble last year, Postmaster Judy Raney said, and she doesn’t expect many complaints this year, either.

“More people file online, so there’s not so much of a rush,” she said.

Still, the post office will be prepared with extra staff for the expected crunch on Tuesday.

The Alferd Packer Memorial String Band also will return, with its usual mix of music and dance. This will be the band’s 20th year of performing on tax day, said Steve Mason, one of the band’s musicians.

“Clearly it’s not the same as going to midnight,” Mason said. “Truth is, though, when we started doing it there were 35 to 40 people jamming in at the last minute. Now there are four or five coming in.”

The band will play until 9 p.m. in the lobby.

Tuesday also is the last chance to file for an extension if you can’t get your taxes done in time.

The IRS will be open Monday and Tuesday to help those with last-minute questions. Help is available by calling (800) 829-1040 between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Friday or by going online to www.irs.gov.
