Topeka man arrested in armed robbery

Money taken from ice cream store at Sixth and Wakarusa

Lawrence police arrested a Topeka man this afternoon in connection with a reported armed robbery at the Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor, 721 Wakarusa Drive.

The man, who police said was in his 20s, was found not far from the store, in the area of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive, after police canvassed the area.

Police were called about 12:25 p.m. and remain on the scene investigating. The employee at the store told police a man came into the store with a hand gun, demanding money, according to police. He left the store with cash and headed east, police said.

Employees of nearby stores had no idea that a robbery may have occurred until approached by a reporter. All said that they couldn’t remember an armed robbery ever happening so close by.

This is the third armed robbery in Lawrence in the past two weeks. Two men were taken into custody earlier this month in connection with an armed robbery of the Kwik Shop at 845 Miss. Police are also investigating an April 1 armed robbery of the Dollar General, 1811 W. Sixth St.
