Shelter praised
To the editor:
We have within our community a remarkable program called the Lawrence Community Shelter. Most people assume it simply responds to the needs of the homeless, but, in point of fact, it also is a primary care system for many of our mentally ill residents.
The professional shelter staff and the dedicated volunteers are overworked, the building housing the shelter is inadequate and the annual budget is too small. But in spite of these handicaps, they care for these, our most vulnerable residents, with professionalism, compassion and energy.
All too often the neighbors and downtown merchants blame the shelter when the disturbed guests wander the streets. Their complaints are valid, but to blame the Lawrence Community Shelter is totally misdirected.
Perhaps it’s time for the merchants, neighbors and City Commission to call in our state legislators and the governor’s office, and ask them why they have all but eliminated state hospital and community alternative care systems for the severe persistent mentally ill.
Lawrence is a beautiful city full of compassionate people. Perhaps we can take the lead and find a way to provide humane care for our most vulnerable residents. We could start by supporting the shelter. With adequate funding and improved facilities, we would enable them to continue their good work.
