On foot or bike, event aims to benefit reading

Altrusa International Inc. of Lawrence is calling all bikers, runners and walkers to the Kaw River Trail on May 5 for the group’s second annual “Run Walk Ride 4 Reading.”

Altrusa International Inc. is an association of business executives and professionals who volunteer their expertise to community projects.

The Lawrence club works on several literacy projects, including the “Born to Read” program, which supplies a book for every newborn at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, scholarships to college-bound high school students and the River City Reading Festival.

Participants will gather donations before the event.

The registration deadline is Tuesday to guarantee a T-shirt the day of the event, but participants also can register beginning at 8:30 a.m May 5 at the east side of North Second Street. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. The registration fee is $10. Forms are available at www.altrusaoflawrenceks.com.
