Children get in the hunt for Easter

Addison Maynard, 2, right, finds another Easter egg during the Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza at South Park. Children were able to collect five decorated eggs Saturday afternoon at the hunt.

Aiden Berndsen-Perez ran right up to the Easter Bunny, but instead of turning around and having his picture taken, the 3-year-old boy faced the giant-sized rabbit and had a chat.

“This is my Easter basket,” he explained.

The chat was quick. Aiden had more important business to take care of, like finding his fair share of Easter eggs.

“He’s got egg fever,” said Alison Berndsen, his mother. After collecting several plastic eggs, Aiden ran back.

“He’s loving it,” said Adrian Perez, his father. “Digging it.”

Aiden and his parents joined hundreds of other families for the annual Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza on Saturday at South Park.

The carnivallike event was put on by Lawrence Parks and Recreation and Hy-Vee.

Meanwhile, 138 other children participated in a more unique Easter egg hunt at the Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, where the Easter Bunny dropped hundreds of eggs in the water.

“That was kind of weird to find out,” said Katarina Shambaugh, 8.

“Make sure when you all jump in, you don’t land on each other, OK?” a lifeguard screamed before the hunt.

When the whistle blew, all the children leaped into the pool, some even pulling their parents in with them.

While conditions were a little more moist than outside, it was a whole lot warmer.

“It’s a good idea,” said Tashya Taylor, as she watched her son play in the pool. “Plus, the kids get to stay and swim.”
