LHS swings big lumber

? Daniel Parker’s three-run homer highlighted a huge offensive day, and the Lawrence High pitching staff settled in after a rough first two innings as the Lions picked up a 12-6 victory Thursday against Shawnee Mission West in a Sunflower League baseball game.

LHS (5-2 overall, 3-0 Sunflower League) pounded out 15 hits, scoring at least three runs in three different innings.

“Even our outs tonight were hard hits,” said LHS coach Brad Stoll. “So I was really pleased with our approach at the plate.”

LHS scored five runs in the top of the first and plated three more in the second, but the Vikings answered with six runs of their own in the opening two frames.

“We smacked them in the mouth, and they smacked us back,” Stoll said.

However, LHS starter Drew Hulse fought through the early trouble to secure the win, while Joe Kornbrust and Dorian Green combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief.

LHS will return to action Tuesday when it travels across town for a 5:30 p.m. showdown against Free State.
