Police, troopers endorse Sebelius

? Two law enforcement groups have endorsed Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ re-election.

Sebelius, a Democrat, touted support from the state Fraternal Order of Police and the Kansas State Troopers Assn.’s political action committee as evidence that she has a strong record on crime.

Ron Kurtz, chairman of the troopers’ PAC, said, “The safety of the citizens of the State of Kansas is her top priority.”

Sebelius’ campaign noted she has signed legislation to strengthen penalties against sex offenders and crack down on methamphetamine manufacturing.

But Rodger Woods, spokesman for GOP gubernatorial challenger Jim Barnett, questioned whether Sebelius has a strong record.

“As governor, she really hasn’t done anything other than sign some legislation that’s been presented to her,” he said.

He also noted that Sebelius vetoed bills in 2004 and 2006 to allow qualified Kansans to carry concealed guns. Legislators, including Barnett, voted to override this year’s veto, and the state will begin issuing permits after Jan. 1.

But Democrats have previously noted Barnett, a physician and senator from Emporia, changed his position on the issue. He voted against the 2004 legislation and supported the 2006 bill. He has said he changed his mind after constituents asked him to study the issue.

As for the groups’ endorsing Sebelius, Woods said such nods typically go to incumbents, citing the groups’ endorsement of Atty. Gen. Phill Kline, a Republican.
