Unbeaten Firebirds to face O-North

After putting up 360 rushing yards and 215 passing yards against Olathe South last week, it’s easy to say the Free State football team has a balanced offensive attack.

The difficult part might be analyzing the strongest dynamic of this Playstation-like offense that has averaged 37.5 points and 409.5 yards per game.

Answers varied from Free State (4-0) players and coaches heading into tonight’s game against Olathe North (2-2).

“I would say it’s definitely running, with two awesome runners in the backfield,” junior wide receiver Craig Rosenstengle said of seniors Ryan and Brian Murphy.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at the Olathe District Activities Center.

If you’re a bigger fan of the aerial attack, fear not. It only took Free State 16 seconds last week to launch a 67-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Murphy to Rosenstengle.

“With him being the backup quarterback, we’ve developed a relationship, so I just know where he’s going to be on the field,” Murphy said of Rosenstengle. “We’ve gotten more comfortable as the season goes on, especially throwing deep balls.”

Ask coach Bob Lisher to name the most impressive part of the offense, and he’ll give you an answer you may not expect.

“Offensively, our entire offensive line,” Lisher said. “Ryan and Brian are a given. They’re going to show up every week and make great plays, but we’re giving them an opportunity to get in some open-field situations.”

Against Olathe North, Free State will look to contain running back Josh Gore, who has 529 yards rushing and six touchdowns. The defense might also look to stop wide receiver Brandon Gant, who had seven receptions for 135 yards and a score last week in Olathe North’s 13-7 overtime loss to Olathe East.

Free State must protect the football against Olathe North. The Firebirds committed six turnovers last week. Lisher said he emphasized limiting turnovers in practice this week, but the team hadn’t practiced any differently because of the increased turnovers.

Free State and Shawnee Mission West are the remaining unbeatens in the Sunflower League. Even though they won’t face each other this season, Lisher said his team couldn’t look ahead to a league title yet.

“Our biggest concern is Friday night, and if our kids don’t bring their A-game, then there won’t be any reason to worry about the Sunflower League Championship,” Lisher said.

Free State and Olathe North didn’t meet last season.
