Alliance to sponsor Pinckney walking tour

A walking tour of the historic Pinckney neighborhood will be sponsored Sunday by the Lawrence Preservation Alliance.

The walk will be from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and walkers will meet in Constant Park, Sixth and Tennessee streets. Participation is free.

Originally known as “West Lawrence” or the “West End,” the Pinckney neighborhood was not separated from Old West Lawrence until 1950. The history of the area dates back to the earliest settlement of Lawrence.

Several of the historic houses in the neighborhood were constructed during the town building boom after the Kansas Pacific Railroad reached Lawrence in 1864. There are still many historic houses standing.
