Thoughtless act

To the editor:

On Saturday evening my husband and I came upon a fatality accident on Wellman Road north of Lawrence. The shame of the whole thing was that not only was there a human fatality but also that of a large black dog.

We did not know at the time if the dog was the cause of the accident or a casualty, but the human fatality was taken away to be treated with dignity and respect while the dog was laid to the side of the road to be left to the elements.

We say shame on all of you who responded to this accident that you couldn’t be bothered to call the Humane Society, which has a 24-hour service, to have them pick up this poor dog who had already suffered so much.

Also, we feel that it took far too long for emergency response to get to the scene and feel that North Lawrence and northern Douglas County have been totally overlooked in not having an emergency response team closer to their needs.
