Free State volleyball wins Seaman invite
Topeka ? The Free State High volleyball team avenged a pool-play loss to Topeka Seaman at the right time Saturday, knocking off the host Vikings to claim the championship at the Topeka Seaman Invitational.
The Firebirds (14-5), seeded fourth in the 10-team field, finished 3-1 in pool play, beating Olathe North, 25-16, 25-18; Santa Fe Trail, 14-25, 25-23, 25-22; and Shawnee Mission North, 25-17, 12-25, 25-17. However, Free State fell to Seaman, 25-20, 25-15, in its fourth match.
The Firebirds rebounded to knock off Topeka Hayden, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, in the semifinals before bouncing Seaman, 25-9, 25-19, in the title match.
Free State senior right-side hitter/setter Kristen Karlin and sophomore Taylor Manning were named to the all-tournament team.
The Firebirds will return to action Thursday in a home quad.
