56-year-old driver killed in two-vehicle accident

One person was killed after a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening on a county road north of Lawrence.

Before 6:30 p.m. a driver lost control of a northbound vehicle on County Road 1045, just north of Midland and south of the Douglas County-Jefferson County line, said Lt. Kari Wempe, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokeswoman.

The vehicle swerved for an unknown reason, and when the driver tried to correct the course, it spun into the southbound lane. An oncoming southbound vehicle, driven by a 30-year-old McLouth man, was unable to stop and struck the driver’s side of the northbound vehicle, Wempe said.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, identified Saturday night only as a 56-year-old, died at the scene, Wempe said. The sheriff’s office declined to release other details pending notification of family members.

Emergency crews at the scene told dispatchers that the McLouth man had suffered injuries, but medics later called off a requested helicopter ambulance. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
