Wichita standoff ends after 17 hours

? A 17-hour police standoff in Wichita ended Friday with the suspect giving himself up after talking to his mother.

The standoff began at 6:30 p.m. Thursday when the owners of a house called police to report finding what looked like explosives in a room the man was renting. The man, who had several unspecified outstanding local and federal warrants, refused to let police come in.

During the standoff, police fired four rounds of tear gas into the house with no success getting him to come out, police Capt. Terry Nelson told KFDI radio. Police later realized he had a gas mask in the house.

He finally came out with his hands up at about 11:30 a.m. Friday after having a telephone conversation with his mother.

“There is quite a lot of concern about what this man’s intent was,” Nelson said, adding the man may have had explosives.

Police have not identified the man or the charges against him.
