A 2-year-old boy fell from the third floor of a west Lawrence apartment and was flown to the hospital as a precaution Friday evening, police said.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl identified Edwin Alejandro as the boy who leaned against a screen in his family’s apartment and toppled to the parking lot about 20 feet below. The family lives at the Boardwalk Apartments, 509 Fireside Drive.

“He seemed to be in relatively good shape,” Hadl said.

Officers believe the boy awoke from a nap about 7 p.m. and walked to the window. The window was open for ventilation, and its screen was intact.

He was standing on a child’s chair when he apparently leaned into the screen and then fell, Hadl said.

A sister heard Edwin crying and notified the mother, who was in another room attending to other children.

Part of the apartment building’s first floor is underground, which made the fall not quite three stories.

Medics treated Edwin at the scene as he had fallen to the surface that includes rocks and asphalt in the parking lot. Hadl said he responded to treatment at the scene.

Medics in a helicopter ambulance flew him to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. A hospital spokeswoman said an update on his condition was unavailable Friday night.

Officers were following up on a few details, but Hadl said police do not suspect any foul play.

“We’re pleased that he seemed to be responding appropriately to the medical personnel,” she said.
