Tax burdens
To the editor:
This is my first time to write like this, but I am inspired by a letter written by Darlene Miller concerning the tax burden on senior citizens throwing them to the wolves, as an article in your paper recently stated. Everything Ms. Miller said is so very true; taxes are getting out of reach for senior citizens.
My husband and I live very frugally on our Social Security checks, and we have to draw from our meager savings to pay for supplemental health insurance. We have lived in Douglas County for four years and have seen our property tax increase substantially every year. I worry that we will not be able to continue to live in our home unless something is done to cut those taxes or at least freeze them so they will not continue to rise.
As Ms. Miller stated, and we agree wholeheartedly, “The city and school system need to take a hard look at where our tax dollars are being spent.” If they had to budget like we do, there would be a lot less waste of our tax dollars.
We never complained about paying taxes all the years our children were in school, and we were glad for their opportunities for good education. But we do feel that there should be some respite for us now.
Thank you, Darlene Miller, for your well-written letter.

Eudora
