Enrollment down, ACT scores up at KU

Fall semester figures released

Kansas University’s fall enrollment fell slightly, but the freshman class has the school’s highest ACT score on record, officials reported today.

The freshman class has an average ACT composite score of 24.6, slightly above the 2001 class of 24.5, and far above the national averge of 21.7.

“Our goal over the years has not been ever-increasing enrollment but instead attracting more and more of the best and brightest students,” said Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

“Students learn from each other as well as from our professors,” Hemenway said.

Meanwhile, overall enrollment dropped at KU by 11 students, from the record in 2005 of 29,624 to 29,613. There are 26,773 students at KU and 2,840 at KU Medical Center, which is the highest enrollment ever there.

Hemenway noted that minority enrollment at KU increased 2.3 percent to 12.2 percent.

The overall fall headcount at the six regents universities was 89,506, which is 689 or 0.8 percent more than last fall.
