Burglary leads police to missing master key

A burglary Tuesday morning in Eudora led police to recover a master key for Lawrence schools stolen in a separate burglary last week at Advanced Glass & Mirror in Lawrence.

Witnesses saw a suspicious vehicle between 7:50 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1500 block of East 1850 Road in Eudora and called police to report the description and tag number. It turned out the home had been burglarized and jewelry stolen from inside.

Later that day, acting on information from the witnesses, sheriff’s officers with help from Lawrence police served a search warrant at a home at 1309 N.J.

They recovered jewelry stolen in the Eudora burglary, as well as a key later identified by the manager of Advanced Glass & Mirror as the Lawrence schools’ master key taken from his business.

A resident of the home on New Jersey, Richard E. Elston, 30, was arrested and booked into jail about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for burglary, theft and criminal damage in the Eudora burglary. He was released on bond.

Police would not say whether he was suspected in the initial burglary at Advanced Glass & Mirror.
