County road reopens

A key Douglas County road linking Lawrence, Vinland and Baldwin reopened Friday after about five months of construction work.

Douglas County Road 1055 between North 800 Road and County Road 458 had been closed since April 27 for replacement of a bridge. Improvements to the road at the bridge also were made, County Engineer Keith Browning said.

Although the road is open, some construction work remains. Motorists are urged to be cautious and heed directions from signs and flaggers.

In addition to the bridge, two curves were reconstructed and new 8-foot-wide paved shoulders were added.

The construction project cost more than $1.06 million. A majority of the project was paid for through federal transportation funds that were administered through the Kansas Department of Transportation.
