Stronger winds, possible thunderstorms Saturday night

Lots of sunshine, with some southerly breezes will sweep through Lawrence today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We have chilly weather for the morning, but it will be warm for the afternoon, as we climb into the 80s,” Schack said.

At 7:30 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 53 degrees, the humidity was 89 percent and winds were out of the east at 5 mph. The average low temperature for this date is 60 degrees. The record low was 42 degrees, set in 1974.

Today’s high will climb to 84 degrees, with winds out of the south from 8 to 15 mph, Schack said The average high temperature for this date is 82 degrees. The record high was 99 degrees, set in 1939.

Overnight, the temperature will drop off to 56 degrees by early Friday morning, Schack said.

Friday’s high will climb to 85 degrees, with stronger winds out of the south at 15 to 25 mph, gusting to near 30 mph, she said.

The chances for strong storms increase Saturday night into Sunday morning, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 65 degrees, with Saturday’s high climbing to 87 degrees, she said.
