As of this morning, the world’s largest retailer officially is in the grocery business in Lawrence.

Wal-Mart is celebrating a 7:30 a.m. grand opening of its new supercenter expansion at 3300 Iowa, which took the company’s traditional store – one of the chain’s first “eco” Wal-Marts – and turned it into a full-fledged supercenter.

The expansion, at more than 90,000 square feet, made room for several new features. The largest is a full-service grocery, with fresh vegetables, organic foods, a deli and other packaged goods.

Other features include a Blimpie restaurant, a portrait studio, a vision center, a SmartStyle hair salon and a Regal Nails salon.

Central National Bank has a branch inside the store, and a “Connect Center” has been set up for sales of wireless phones.
