Cancer fundraiser exceeds $1 million

The fundraiser Treads & Threads met its goal and grossed more than $1 million Friday at the Kansas Speedway to benefit the Cancer Center at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

With more than 3,000 guests, the fifth annual event sold out for the first time, and organizers expect it to net between $600,000 to $700,000 for the cancer center, said hospital spokesman Dennis Minich.

During its first four years, the annual event had raised more than $1.3 million for the cancer center.

Proceeds from this year’s event will support the Midwest Prostate Center, expand the Patient Resource Center at the KU Cancer Center and provide additional training for members of the hospital’s cancer care team.
