Superintendent hopes to reduce fees

Lawrence school board agenda highlights ¢ 7 p.m. Monday ¢ District service center, 110 McDonald Drive ¢ Sunflower Broadband channel 26 ¢ Meeting documents online at www.usd497.org

Bottom line

Supt. Randy Weseman will ask the school board to consider a plan to begin eliminating the extra fees parents pay at the beginning of the school year for items that range from riding a bus to playing football.

Background

While some parents with one or two children might pay $200 to $300 in fees each August, some parents with four to six children who have to ride the bus might have quite a hardship – they have to pay several thousand dollars in fees, Weseman said. He plans to begin developing a multiyear plan for the district to absorb most of those fees, which amount to about $2.4 million, into its regular budget.
