Driving advice

To the editor:

Recently several motorists wrote in expressing concern about bicyclists’ riding habits in this area. I would like to return the favor for motorists.

You all really need to learn to stop. Come to a complete stop at red lights, stop signs and intersections. If you have to, open the door and put your foot on the pavement like I am supposed to do on my bicycle when I stop.

Look over all the buttons and switches on your dashboard. Look for the turn signal. See if it works and then use it when you drive. It will momentarily confuse the drivers around you, allowing time to make your turn safely.

Speed limits need to be followed, period. After all, it’s the law. I dare you to follow the speed limits in town the next time you drive. Don’t do it with little kids in the car. I do not want them to see or hear those obscene gestures.

Do stop or yield for anyone in a crosswalk. We had to use taxpayer dollars to post signs around town for something drivers already should have known.

Kansas now has a safe-passing law on the books, I am told. So if you pass, give them at least 3 feet or wait until you can pass safely. That goes for cyclists, cars, farm vehicles, everything.

I know motorists in town will now know to follow the traffic laws on the books; maybe it is just because nobody bothered to tell them before. Thanks.

Jim Turner,
