Offices, services close for Labor Day holiday

Government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed today in observance of Labor Day.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts.

City offices in most area towns and counties also will be closed.

Most banks will be closed.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department’s office and clinic will be closed.

No Lawrence Transit System buses will run today.

Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free.

City residents are asked to put grass clippings out with their normal weekly trash collection, as city crews will not be picking up grass or yard clippings today.

Commercial waste collections will run as scheduled today.

To report a water or sewer emergency during the weekend or the holiday, call 843-2685.

All city recreation facilities will be closed today, and Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., also will be closed.

There will be no recreational or aquatics classes, special events or adult or youth sports today. Coffeehouse and the Pre-Coffeehouse Dinner have been moved to Tuesday. For more information, call 832-7920.

Eagle Bend Golf Course will accept tee times from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. today for its final day of the summer.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. for lap swimming; from noon to 1 p.m. for warm-water lap swimming; and from 1 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. for other water activities.

Kansas University offices will be closed, and no classes will be in session. The Dole Institute of Politics will remain open.

Lawrence Public Library will be closed today.

There will be no regular mail delivery today. UPS and FedEx regular deliveries also will not be made.

Douglas County Senior Services and the senior center will be closed today. There will be no home delivery senior meals or at meal sites, and Bus 62 will not run.

Lawrence Meals on Wheels will be delivering.

The business office of the Journal-World will be open for walk-ins and phone inquiries from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. today.

USA Today will not be delivered.

Most liquor stores will be open but might close early.
