Civilized actions

To the editor:

Thank you for the excellent editorial on the new state law providing a felony penalty for animal cruelty. Many people, including the director of the Lawrence Humane Society, worked hard for many years to see the bill pass.

The increasing public awareness that, as you point out in this piece, people who are cruel to animals frequently go on to commit serious violence against human beings contributed to the bill’s success. But, ultimately, it is the realization that we cannot, as civilized people, tolerate gratuitous violence against any living creature that fully justifies the measure. You have stated that point very well. Thanks again.
