Bond issue at stake for Santa Fe Trail

Voters in southwestern Douglas County in the Santa Fe Trail school district will cast ballots in a school bond referendum during the Nov. 7 election.

If approved, the district would make $14.5 million in improvements on the high school campus in Carbondale.

A year ago, voters rejected a $16 million bond, which would have allowed improvements at all of the district’s schools.

The school board decided to reduce the bond amount and make improvements only to the high school campus. That decision came after numerous community meetings since the last election, Supt. Terry Schmidt said.

The improvements would include renovation of 15 classrooms at the 37-year-old high school. Additions would provide designated space for instrumental music, vocal music, art education, drama and theater classes; a middle school wing for the district’s seventh- and eighth-graders; and a wrestling and weight room area.

The school district was established 40 years ago.
