Harmful plants

To the editor:

Many thanks to the Kansas Sierra Club for alerting citizens of Kansas to a very real threat that calls upon all of us to take action. Sunflower Electric is about to receive permits to build three coal-fired plants in Holcomb. Not only would these plants cause more toxic pollution, more global warming, further degradation of habitat for wildlife and domestic animals across the state, but 92 percent of the energy from these plants will be exported out of state. We would get all the pollution and sickness and only 8 percent of the benefits.

Kansas is one of the best states in the country for clean wind energy, which would create as many jobs as coal plants, as well as pay farmers for use of their land for the wind generators. For more information, go to www.kansas.sierraclub.org.

Please ask Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to deny the permits and insist that Kansas needs to help lead our nation toward sustainability for the benefit of all living beings. What sort of world will we leave our grandchildren if we do nothing?
