Quality Electric sale to enable expansion
Darrell Norris’ decision to retire, sell his business and plug into leisurely activities soon could mean more work for the folks at Quality Electric.
Thirty-five years after founding the electric-contracting business in his Lawrence garage, Norris has sold his company to two brothers who plan to add to its staff of 25 employees and boost its more than $2 million in annual revenues.
“I’m at retirement age,” said Norris, 65. “I’ve had enough electrical fun. Now I’m going to go have some other fun.”
Taking over are brothers Mike and Jeff Hutton. They plan to continue the company’s installation and service work for residential, commercial and institutional clients throughout the region.
But the Huttons are looking into adding industrial work to their offerings. Jeff Hutton already owns J&M Control Systems Inc. in Galesburg, Ill., an established contractor for industrial projects and occasional commercial jobs.
“It’s business as usual for at least the short term here,” said Mike Hutton, whose brother is splitting time between the two operations. “We’d like to get into the industrial market, and design-build market. That’s the path we’re taking at this point.”
The Huttons plan to hire another two or three electricians soon, as the company recently landed some residential work in Junction City. But the longer-term goal is to add industrial projects in the Kansas City metro area.
“It will be somewhat significant for us, once we penetrate the market,” Mike Hutton said. “That’s where we’ll target.”
