Free State soccer team finishes off Manhattan

? Andrew Heck scored off a rebound in overtime as the Free State High boys soccer team earned a 2-1 victory Tuesday against Manhattan in the opening round of Class 6A regional play.

The Firebirds (6-10-1) opened the scoring with 15 minutes remaining, as Drew Schelar capitalized on a Heck assist following a corner kick. Manhattan (9-6-2) answered four minutes later, setting the stage for the overtime dramatics.

Free State now must face top-seeded Washburn Rural (15-2) on Thursday at a time and location to be determined.

“It will be a very tough task, as Rural is very big and athletic,” said Free State coach Jason Pendleton. “We have to hope the ball bounces our way as it did tonight and that we can be the windshield and not the bug.”
