Community pride

To the editor:

To whomever spread trash on the River Road east of County Road 1029 on Saturday:

The trash is now all picked up. Of course, I don’t know who did this, but this is to let everyone know it is not appreciated. Lecompton is a small, proud community and we do not have a Wendy’s, a Sonic, a Wal-Mart and so on. We take a dim view of that rubbish being left in our neighborhood just like any people who have pride in their community would; however, what we do have is a rich, historical past, a fine church, a top-notch museum, a historical landmark and a very good school district.

So as I was picking up your garbage, it occurred to me that we are not so different than anyone else in Douglas County. Yet many of us feel that way because of the likelihood that the bridge that links us with Jefferson County will be closed and our pleas seem to have fallen on deaf or indifferent ears.

As the situation develops, it might be worth considering if south Lawrence would miss its access to north Lawrence. I dare say they would. Oh, but then you have two bridges that you could address a potential issue like that, don’t you?

That is where our two communities differ; we do not.

Bonny Fugett,

Lecompton
