Enough spending
To the editor:
The recent letter from David Holroyd about conservative spending for the library had myself wondering what he is thinking. Doesn’t Mr. Holroyd realize that the City Commission and other governmental bodies in Lawrence and Douglas County cannot spend enough?
He should realize that the more they spend, the more our taxes can go up. Doesn’t he realize then that those who want affordable housing can continue to meet and have meeting after meeting and accomplish nothing?
If conservative spending took place as he proposed, there wouldn’t be any meetings on affordable housing. After all, part of my housing costs are property taxes. Apparently those who talk of “affordable” don’t understand all the expense of housing.
Mr. Holroyd, there needs to be more spending so that the local architects can continue to feed from the public trough. And after all, what would the commission do if they spent conservatively? They wouldn’t need any consultants.
You surely don’t expect the City Commission and staff to make decisions on their own, do you? Give them a break and let them hire more consultants. The city needs to spend more and more.
You should encourage the city and county to spend twice as much as they are now. Then they can be leaders in the state of Kansas. After all, Lawrence does want to be in the forefront.
How dare you expect these leaders in the community to be frugal with public moneys. Open up your wallet and give them some greenbacks today!
Anthony Nieto,
Lawrence
