Phill Kline revives 15-year-old allegation, says ‘no weasel needed’ in office

Atty. Gen. Phill Kline on Monday brought up a 15-year-old sexual harassment claim against Democratic challenger Paul Morrison, a move that Morrison's wife called "malicious" and proof that Kline had lost his "moral compass."

"I hope that when Phill Kline goes home to his family tonight that he feels ashamed of what he did today," Joyce Morrison said, adding that the accusations of sexual harassment were unfounded and had been dismissed from federal court for lack of evidence.

Kline spoke of the allegations as a new poll showed Morrison surging ahead of Kline 56 percent to 43 percent, a 16 percentage point swing in one month. In September, the SurveyUSA poll had Kline at 51 percent and Morrison at 48 percent.

Just hours before the poll results were released, Kline and Kansas Republican Party Executive Director Ron Freeman had a news conference where they brought up the sexual harassment lawsuit, saying it was proof that Morrison had misrepresented his leadership as Johnson County district attorney as being scandal-free.

In 1991, the Johnson County victims witness coordinator said she had been sexually harassed by her boss, Morrison.

But in 1992, the complaint was dismissed by the Equal Opportunity Commission. Later in the year, a federal court dismissed her lawsuit too.

Kline and Freeman talked about the case in front of the Topeka Zoo because Freeman said "at the Topeka Zoo we have no weasels, and we believe we don't need a weasel in the AG's office in Kansas."

After the news conference, Joyce Morrison spoke with reporters.

"We've known Phill a long time. I don't know when Phill lost his moral compass," she said.

"I don't understand how a person who claims family values can go out and attack another person's family," she said.

Kline's campaign provided reporters with copies of a portion of the deposition of the woman who complained against Morrison. In the statement, she said Morrison made a pass at her while they and others from the office were drinking at a bar.

Morrison's campaign said the accusations were "utterly false."

Kline said he was justified in bringing up the lawsuit because Morrison often has mentioned that Kline's nephew, whom Kline had hired to be his driver, had been arrested on drug charges, and that Bryan Brown, whom Kline hired as director of the attorney general office's consumer affairs division, had been arrested a dozen times as an anti-abortion protester.

"I've known about the sexual harassment lawsuit for some time and have been reticent to speak of it, but when Mr. Morrison repeated his claim that he had not been with a whiff of scandal, and he continuously attacked my family and falsely misrepresented Mr. Brown's service to this state ... I said enough is enough," Kline said.

Morrison's wife said the two situations were different because Kline as the chief law enforcement official in the state had hired people with criminal records.

During the Kline and Freeman news conference, Freeman also accused Morrison of settling a murder case "so he could spend more time on the campaign trail."

Morrison's campaign said the allegation was false.

The case involved the murder of David Harmon in 1982. The case was unsolved for 24 years until earlier this year when Melinda Raisch, who was Harmon's former wife, and Mark Manglesdorf pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. The two will be eligible for parole in 5 1/2 years.

Concerning the poll, the survey showed Morrison, who had trailed in September by three points, now leads by 13 points.

Kline has lost his lead mostly by losing Republicans in western Kansas and Wichita. Kline had led by 20 percentage points in Wichita, and he now trails by 15. In western Kansas, the two candidates are tied; last month Kline led by 28 points.

The poll was taken Oct. 13-15, and surveyed 531 likely voters. The poll, conducted for KCTV-Kansas City and KWCH-Wichita, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percent.

The Kline campaign dismissed the poll, saying the automated telephone surveys are "notoriously inaccurate."

GOOD. On the one hand, you have a posturing, pandering say-anything-to-get-elected powermonger trying to leverae this office into a political career.

On the other hand you have a middle-of-the-road candidate who has been doing a very similar job to the one he is campaigning for for 16 years, and by all accounts, doing it well.

Just compare the 2 scenarios the Kline campaign has tried to make equivalent. Kline is criticized for actively employing former felons (which is unquestionable fact); while Morrison has acusations leveled over a decade ago, and he is exonerated by 2 separate hearings. Not at all the same thing, and to my mind, an act of desperation from the Kline campaign.

Isn't this like the 4th or 5th time Kline's campaign has come up with some spurrious, retraction-worthy bit of muck to throw at Morrison? Are people finally getting tired of Kline's schtick?

Kansas needs solid, dependable, and experienced elected officials. Not partisan hacks like Kline.

Amen. Kline is another Savonarola, a wannabee demagogue who cares little for the law or the AG's office; he wants to inherit Pat Roberts' Senate seat someday.

Kline needs to be beaten, decisively, to show others that his brand of malignancy will not be tolerated in Kansas.

Serious issues. But the issue everyone should be concerned with is Kline's attempt to legalize violations of patient confidentiallity. This long held moral code, now enforced by HIPAA regulations, is in force for a reason. Without the utmost confidence of provider/patient confidentiallity, patients would be inclined to withhold vital information that could compromise their care. This issue should frighten everyone; I know it does me.

No one who has followed the slimy reign of Phill Kline should be surprised at these tactics. They would have expected nothing less. On the other hand, it appears that the Republican party has officially begun the sludgefest with Ron Freeman joining the sliming.

Kansan voters are sick of these tactics. When close Kline ally Connie Morris (he refused to prosecute her), who is another supposed “Christian” officeholder was tossed out by primary voters after the validity, not just the extravagance of her billing taxpayers for almost $3,000 in personal expenses was challenged, she claimed,
“…the 'lying liberal media' defeated her.”

“The media assassinated me,” Morris contended. “They did everything they could to ruin my character, my reputation. I wish I could go through all the stories to tell you how they were either blatant lies or gross misinterpretations of the facts.”

“We just had a lot coming against us,” (including) “a lot of well-funded, loud, obnoxious, rude people who have no ethics and morals, and they don't bat an eye at lying and manipulating the truth.”

Nor do such liberal opportunists mind “slandering people and harming their families and their reputation and their business and their communities and their state,” Morris continued. “It's a shame,” she added. “It's a shame, and I feel bad for them when they face God on Judgment Day.”

Thank you, Phill Kline, for bringing up the best reason yet to vote for Paul Morrison. When faced with false accusations and possible public embarrassment…paul did the right thing!! He did not attempt to cover up, he did not lie, he let the legal process work and, lo and behold, he was vindicated! Not only that, he ran for higher office knowing this “scandal” was in the archives. Guess the truth really does set you free!

Has everyone forgot about how Phil Kline had to drop out when he was nominated to a federal appeals court judge position by President Bush? Then Attorney General Carla Stoval (Republican) said he should tell everyone what was in his FBI record that made him withdraw. He wouldn't. With everything going on in Washington with Republicans going after young kids I think he should tell us what was in his record.

His constituents are every resident of Kansas that are of legal voting age. The same people who were polled. The same people who now say they prefer Morrison over Kline. I don't think that is evidence that he is doing “exactly what his constituents asked him to do.”

He may be doing exactly what his conservative base asked him to do, but he clearly is not doing exactly what his constituents asked him to do, as evidenced by this poll and gawd-willing, on November 7.

I like legal minds in office that realize that one is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law; in the eyes of the law, Morrison did NOT sexually harrass the woman.

A “scandal” is not when someone is acquitted of an accusation of wrongdoing. Anyone can be investigated for nearly any action; scandals involve violations of trust that are founded (e.g., marital infidelity, lying under oath, conspiracy to cover up a wrongdoing, etc…)

Clearly, innocent until proven guilty is not in Mr. Kline's vocabulary and as the Attorney General, THAT is very frightening to me. The AG is the chief law enforcement official in the state and to blur the line between an accusation and a conviction (not unheard of under Kline and his data mining) is the LAST mistake an AG should make.

You have implied that you know where HGA lives (why bring up Baldwin?).

Are the consumers protected by him and his Criminal head of the division. What kind of leverage would a corporation have against a man who soes not respect the law. Phill Kline needs to be prosecuted for all of the wrong doings.

So anyone have any information about what is in Kline's FBI file that would necessitate withdrawing his name from consideration as a U.S. attorney?

I mean he has already been slapped by the Kansas Supreme Court for unethical conduct. He has ignored court orders. He has lied about the efficacy of his fishing expedition through 90 people's medical records. He has put the tax-exempt status of several Kansas churches in jeopardy out of his own self-interest and aggrandizement. And now, desperate to maintain his position, he mucks around in a 15 year-old claim that has been shown to be unfounded, unsubstantiated, and wholly without merit. Nice guy. Christian posterboy.

Wonder what is in that file?

Which would be fine. The AG's office should not be a particularly partisan position anyway. Enofrcing the laws should not be a function of one's party or religion. Unfortunately, Kline has treated it as a policy-making position, which I assume is based on his aspirations to be governor.

This is a sight that I have seen referenced several times on this forum (or whatever you call it). Everyone should look at it and see where some of these folks are coming from. Honestly it reminds me of the videos I've seen on the web that claim that the WTC was taken down by controlled demolition. It's like stumbling upon an award-winning, decorated DEA officer in a crack house, sucking deep on his pipe, and he looks up at you with heavily-lidded eyes and mumbles “Probleh? I doan haffa dwug probleh…”

Probably have to go with Morrison. Bible thumping is all well and good when you go to church, but not to assemble folks afterwards for a fundraiser.

For squeaky clean, refer to Bill Clinton and Hillary.

They would be the models.

Kline a little too desperate to suffice in this election. On Ryun and Boyd, she seems a little desperate, but havn't made my mind up on that.

Probably the sane thing to do would be vote everyone out, including your judges. Cush job, and don't work much. And NO ONE ever votes them out?

It seems that a poster named conservativeman was the only one other than Marion to recognize the “88” as a white supremicist code. I had never known of this. I am astounded though at the banished conservativeman's vast knowledge of white supremicist codes. It really showed the depth of his interests. (FYI, he was also very anti-American Indian; i don't know how much of his numerous posts you have read.)

Just to let everyone know, they can insult my completely unimportant username as much as they want. I don't have any deep personal feelings about a name i use to post on a blog. After all, what is in a name?

If you do respond to my question, it should be interesting. I don't mind being compared to HGA or I guess being accused of being HGA (or of HGA being me) but I'm curious as to why you would think that.

It is strange that you call HGA “Gale” several times & made reference to Baldwin. Engagehorn did that. I find it strange that someone completely unrelated would do the same thing, don't you?

You have posted the same link that engagehorn did (Bozell). I guess that it could mean that you and engagehorn read & post the same right-wing propoganda which means that nothing you are arguing is original thought.

I don't think you are conservativeman as he was occasionally funny.

Kline is on his way out. Many people are not happy with his conduct in regards to violating gag orders of the Court. Many people are not happy with Kline using his office to further his political agenda (ban abortion). Many people are tired of his false claims that his inquisition has produced results.

An Attorney General's job is to uphold the law of the State not work against it and to provide legal advice to the State. It should be a completely non-political job. We need someone holding that office to understand that. Kline obviously does not.

Good thing is, no rational person will defend Kline after this. The next round of polls should show him sinking into oblivion.

If Kline does prevail in the election, or even makes a close run, we may need to rethink some of our fellow citizens' grasp of reality.

Hear, hear. Good on you, Katara.

There are many different facets of the truth that some of us simply do hot have the time to pursue; that is why a forum like this is so valuable - people can bring different truths and views to the table and spread them out for others to read and understand.

I've learned a lot about current and prior events; oddly enough, from clashing with the late-lamented Aminius. It is better, though, when information is presented in a civil, objective manner.

Kansas voters can see the truth, sooner or later. Kline fooled a lot of people for a long time, but his personal FBI file, his defiance of court orders, his trolling through private medical records, and his condescending arrogance have alienated hundreds of thousands.

A few tomato schooners at Louise's West on the night of November 8 should be in order.

The sad thing is that people want to make it about their egos and it isn't. They want to make it about who wins and who loses but I think that engaging in that mindset makes everybody lose.

I may not agree with everyone on LJW and I may point out things that irritate or annoy me about other posters but you will always get an honest opinion out of me. I try not to engage in the same tactics that the negative people do but like everybody else, I am human.

I don't think it is a sign of weakness to admit you are wrong.

And with that, I do apologize for calling Marion racist on the Columbus Day thread. I don't think he is as objective as he would like to portray himself and I think that some things he have posted can be very easily interpreted as racist but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that it is not what he meant.

Anyway, back to the topic.

Kansans are an independent group of people. I'm not a Kansan by birth but I live here and this is my home. My children were born here.

There is so much about Kansas to enjoy. It is wide open. The people are friendly and caring. Kansas should be all about freedom. Isn't that why pioneers came here?

We shouldn't tolerate government intrusion into out lives for things that are none of the government's business.

Government has its place. It is a useful vehicle to help serve the largest group of people possible such as social services and information.

Kline has stepped past the boundries and is intruding into our personal lives because *he* believes that his religous beliefs should be forced upon everyone. He doesn't care about your rights. He cares only about staying in power and at our freedoms' expense.

As you can see, I'm feeling a bit soap-boxish tonight.

There seems to be a trend in that around here. I find it a little disturbibg getting emails from people I do not even know. Judgeing from the content I doubt I ever would want to know them. Just ignore them, but save a copy just in case. I know I have had to report one person and trapped her calls too. Very insane stuff. Good luck.

Have you gone to the police yet, carolannfugate? You should. Per AT&T you have to file a police report in order to get a subpoena for them to release the call info to police to get the person prosecuted. AT&T can't & won't release the caller's info to you. They will only release it with a subpoena and only to the authorities. The police will tell you the caller id means nothing.

And before you ask, I have not experienced this firsthand. I have a co-worker who was stalked by her ex-boyfriend and his ex-wife that he divorced long before my friend came about. How he talked the ex-wife into stalking his ex-girlfriend, I will never know.

It was crazy the stuff she had to go through to get some help. Hopefully things have changed since she had to go through it.
