To the editor:

What a good idea for Kansas University to establish a youth choir for children in grades 4 through 8! It will surely enhance the fine job our public schools do in introducing youngsters to the world of song, where poetry is set to music with melodies that can be sung.

I witnessed first hand the fine quality of music education in Lawrence as our daughter (an A Cappella Choir alumna) and I attended the Fall Choral Concert at Lawrence High School. Each of the four choirs represented had learned every note and word by heart. The program featured American poets and songwriters and American folk songs and spirituals, all perfectly and movingly performed. The full house audience sang “America the Beautiful” with the choirs, and for a little while I felt that the America I had always known had returned.

Afterward, we chatted with Jeff and Rogene Anderson, the director and accompanist in our daughter’s time. She reaffirmed how important they had been in her life, and how often she remembered the music they had offered. I rejoiced in the knowledge that these are hers forever.
