KU women start season in style

Amid the video montages, dunks and hysteria of Late Night in the Phog, the Kansas University women’s basketball team may have found what it would like its season to be symbolized as – a Ferrari.

Coach Bonnie Henrickson drove a Ferrari into Allen Fieldhouse as part of her introduction during the night’s events.

“I just found out about that about a week ago Tuesday,” Henrickson said. “That was not my idea, but it was pretty cool. It’s beautiful, but it’s tiny, though.”

After Henrickson’s brief speech to the fans, the Jayhawks held a team dance-off – freshmen versus upperclassmen – which they called, “Must earn the stripes.”

“I knew they had practiced a lot, but I hadn’t seen it,” Henrickson said. “It was in my office. Lindsay Ballweg with her feet on my desk – we’ll have to talk about that in the morning.

“I thought the upperclassmen came out in a better rhythm than the freshmen did, but they just might have been a little bit nervous.”

Henrickson wasn’t willing to point out any particular athlete for her dancing ability – for fear of being called out had she been in the same situation – but Kelly Kohn’s explanation helped her out.

“We all have our own different styles,” Kohn said. “We’re all from all across America, so we all kind of come in with our own little style. But I’ve got to give props to my girl Rebecca Feickert. She couldn’t get her shoes off. She had to leave her shoes in the middle of the court, and she pulled it off really well. She did the rest of her routine in her socks and did it just as well.”

Kohn said the freshmen were excited finally to become part of the rich KU tradition.

“It was definitely something I’d never experienced before,” Kohn said. “Needless to say, I’ve never performed or been in front of that many people in my life. It’s just a rushing moment, coming out of that tunnel, being introduced for the first time in your college career. It was just a big rush to my head. … But it was worth every second of it, and I can’t wait to do it again next year.”

The rush to the head of Kohn caught the eye of Henrickson, who said Kohn was the most impressive in the squad’s first scrimmage of the season.

“I liked Kelly Kohn being aggressive,” Henrickson said. “Lindsay did what I thought she could do in making shots. LaChelda Jacobs got to the rim – she didn’t finish, but she got to the rim. We saw kids run out in transition, and I think our speed is better. I also think we’re more athletic on the perimeter, obviously.

“But it’s like an all-star game, the post (players) don’t touch it much. We’ll learn to throw it inside a little more.”

Kohn was a perfect 2-for-2 during the 12-minute scrimmage, to go along with an assist, turnover and steal.

“We’re taking the shots, and we’re being aggressive, so they’re going to fall sometimes,” Kohn said. “I’ve always kind of been the leader type, to where I adapt to any situation I’m put into. I still consider myself a freshman, and of course I don’t have the experience of the upperclassmen, but I also feel I have the leadership qualities to where I’m able to step up in some positions as a younger player and kind of take control of our inexperienced players.”

Ballweg was the highest-scoring freshman for the night. She matched Shaquina Mosley with five points. Marija Zinic led all players in rebounds with four, while Jacobs led all freshmen with three – which was the same amount as junior forward Jamie Boyd.

Notes: The basketball program has a few recruits in town over the weekend, with Tyra White and Chelsea Jones joining the Late Night festivities and Krysten Boogaard making an official visit Sunday.

White was named a Street and Smith All-American and is the 32nd-rated player in the nation for the class of 2007 and the No. 4 wing player. She also is ranked 17th in the country by Hoop Gurlz.

The Hickman Mills recruit plays for the Kansas City Select AAU squad and is also showing interest in a couple of Big 12 Conference teams – Missouri, Nebraska and Texas Tech – along with LSU and USC.

Jones is the 34th-rated player in the nation for the class of 2008 out of Southside High in Fort Smith, Ark., and plays for the Arkansas Belles AAU team.

Boogaard is visiting out of Regina, Saskatchewan, and is one of the top prospects in Canada and was a member of the 2005 Canada U17 Team, where she had the third-highest scoring average with 9.4 points over five games.
