Record cold temperature frosts Lawrence

Warm-up to take city to 60 degrees today

October 13, 2006

Pull out your coat, gloves and scarves this morning - Lawrence has set a new low temperature record for this date.

"We are down at 22 degrees this morning and it feels like, with the wind chill factored in, 17 degrees," said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Twenty-two degrees was the new record low, Schack said.

After a cold and frosty start, Lawrence is headed back up to 60 degrees for the afternoon, Schack said. Winds will be from the west at 5 to 15 mph, she said.

At 6:55 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport's temperature was 25 degrees, the humidity was 88 percent and winds were out of the north at 3 mph. Schack said the temperature in downtown Lawrence was 32 degrees.

The average low temperature for this date is 50 degrees. The old record low was 30 degrees, set in 1979.

The average high temperature for this date is 72 degrees. The record high was 91 degrees, set in 1975.

Overnight, Lawrence's temperature will fall to 30 degrees by early Saturday morning, Schack said.

Saturday's high will be 64 degrees, with mostly sunny skies, she said.

There's a chance for rain on Sunday with the low starting at 44 degrees in the morning, climbing to a high of 63 degrees Sunday afternoon, Schack said.

There's another chance for rain Sunday night into Monday morning, she said.
