Classes to resume Thursday at Broken Arrow and South Junior High

Electrical problems that led to Broken Arrow Elementary and South Junior High schools to close today have been repaired and both schools will reopen Thursday, according to Lawrence Public school officials.

Power was shut off at both schools about 7:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. after South officials discovered rain water pouring in from the outside through an electrical conduit in the main electrical distribution panel that serves both South and Broken Arrow, according to Will Fernandez, South principal.

An orchestra concert that was going on at the time at South had to be immediately canceled. Parents and students were asked to leave the building, Fernandez said.

Westar Energy crews cut power to the line leading into the building. And crews worked overnight and this morning to remove water and turn electric power back on, said Bryan Hunter, the school district’s maintenance supervisor. Work was continuing this morning to repair an area where the water seeped into the underground conduit, Hunter said.

The power issue also briefly affected telephone and computer service to Wakarusa Valley Elementary, though classes remained in session.
