AARP seeks volunteers to offer tax filing aid

Volunteers are needed to provide free tax assistance to residents of Douglas and Franklin counties during tax season. Community volunteers with experience in preparing their own taxes can be trained for the AARP program. Computer skills are helpful but not required as volunteers assist with general services including receptionist work and other support. ¢ The Lawrence school district seeks community volunteers to assist with textbook and supply distribution. Volunteers are needed to assist by bar-coding and boxing items for delivery to schools. ¢ Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. and Hospice Care in Douglas County seek volunteers who will be screened, interviewed and trained for their tasks. Successful volunteers are caring, compassionate people who want to help families cope with the end of life of a beloved family member. Hospice volunteers help by conversing with patients and listening to tales of days gone by, preparing light meals, turning and repositioning bedfast patients, reading aloud and helping to write letters, assisting ambulatory patients to the rest room, and providing companionship while the primary caregiver is away. ¢ The Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council seeks volunteers to help with a drug awareness and prevention after-school program. The program runs one hour each week for eight weeks, and volunteers can choose a preferred day and time slot. ¢ Ballard Community Services seeks volunteers for Late Night in the Phog on Friday. Volunteers will assist by collecting nonperishable food items and boxing them. Volunteers must be available by 4:45 p.m. Friday and will be done in time to participate in the festivities. ¢ The Lawrence Meals on Wheels program is in need of volunteer drivers to assist with meal delivery for several recently established delivery routes. Volunteers deliver lunch to homebound community members. Driver positions are available each day of the week. Route delivery takes approximately 45 minutes.
