Ex-mayors, media to help raise funds

Former Lawrence mayors and members of the media will volunteer this weekend to raise funds to help people pay for home heating this winter.

The Mayors and Players Turn It On! Retro Party will be from 8 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday at JB Stouts Sports Bar & Grill, 721 Wakarusa Drive.

Mayors and players will be tending the bar and spinning CDs for tips that will be donated for heating service. Donations will be matched by Thrivent, the local branch of the national investment company.

Special guest will be former Kansas University basketball player Christian Moody, who will help serve drinks. There also will be chances to win KU men’s basketball tickets.

Funds gathered through the event will go to those who need help through ECKAN, which works with families facing hardships in meeting their financial needs. More than 350 households in Lawrence had their utilities shut off in September.

Free home weatherization kits also are available through ECKAN.

The bartender/disc jockey teams participating in this year’s event are:

¢ 8 p.m., former Mayors Erv Hodges and Sue Hack;
