Plant objections

To the editor:

I want to thank the forward-thinking members of the City Commission who voted to oppose the proposed massive expansion of the coal-fired power plant at Holcomb. I believe that global warming due to the burning of fossil fuel is the most serious threat of this century, and my biggest objection to the plant, as was the commissioners’, is the 13 million tons of carbon dioxide it would add to the atmosphere every year.

A letter writer condemned the commissioners’ action but confined himself to vague epithets and facetious remarks. I would encourage anyone to think hard enough to find reasons to support their opinions. For example, the writer could have said he supports the massive expansion of the Holcomb plant because:

¢ It’s not in my backyard.

¢ Opposing it might cost me money in the short term.

¢ Global warming is not a problem for me; my children or grandchildren can do the worrying.

¢ Our actions don’t cause global warming anyway; President Bush said so.

Well, you get the idea.

Joe Douglas,
