More counterfeit money shows up at restaurant

Another fake $20 bill turned up in Lawrence Police hands in the past month after a couple tried to use it at a restaurant.

Police say a man and woman tried to use the fake bill Oct. 31 at a Sonic Drive In. A 27-year-old woman working there said that she returned the bill to the customers after she realized it was a fake.

The customers then returned their food and drove off, according to the report.

It’s the fifth time in the past month that someone has tried use fake money at local businesses.

Two weeks ago, two fake $100 bills were used at a local restaurant, while two fake $20 bills were used at Abe & Jake’s Landing and a different restaurant, police say.

Police Sgt. Dan Ward said that police work with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, turning over counterfeit bills so they can be entered into a database. He wasn’t sure if the department had retrieved those bills yet.

Ward said the police continued to investigate the incidents.
