Kansas University’s music and dance department will present a fall concert by the KU Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Lied Center.

The orchestra will begin the evening with the “Overture Coriolan, op. 62,” by Ludwig van Beethoven. This overture is based on the story of Coriolanus, a hero who is unjustly exiled from Rome. The program also features Vier Letzte Lieder (“Four Last Songs”) by Richard Strauss, based on the poems about death by Hermann Hesse and Joseph von Eichendorff. The songs by Strauss will be performed by soloist Diane Kalinowski, a soprano apprentice at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and KU voice/opera student. The program concludes with a performance of the “Symphony No. 1, op. 39 in E Minor” by Jean Sibelius. It is a lush Romantic work that combines intimate melodies, fiery fanfares and primitive rhythms. The concert will be conducted by Vera Volchansky, a KU graduate student.

Tickets for this concert are $7 for the general public and $5 for students and senior citizens, and can be ordered by calling the Lied Center Ticket Office at 864-2787.
