White substance ID’d as baby powder
A mysterious white powder that fell out of an envelope Wednesday at the county’s probation office turned out to be baby powder, county officials say. The Community Corrections office in the basement of the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St., was evacuated shortly after noon Wednesday.
“A letter was received by one of our probation officers. When he opened it, there was a white powdery substance that came out,” said Ron Stegall, the county’s chief probation officer. But he said he and other county employees were notified later in the day that it was baby powder.
An answer as to whether it’s being investigated as a criminal matter wasn’t available Thursday from local law enforcement agencies.
