Thank you, KU

To the editor:

I would like to send a big shout out to the staff of Kansas University for all they do for the students in the Lawrence public schools. On behalf of the seventh-grade teachers at Southwest Junior High School, I’d like to specifically thank Dr. Liz Berghout, Dr. Johannes Feddema, Candace Dunback, Dawnelle Prince and their graduate students and colleagues for sharing their knowledge and skills with our seventh-graders every year when we trek to KU for our annual field trip.

It is there that students learn about the Campanile and its history, and get the opportunity to play the bell tower. Students also get to learn about the many facets of modern geography and meteorology at Lindley Hall. Students marvel at the many engineering disciplines and the great cutting-edge projects that are being developed within them. Of course, KU athletic history is always a hit with young adolescents as well.

In this time of tight budgets, these treasured resources, the KU faculty, give of their time to provide a enriching experience for our seventh-graders at no expense. Yet the knowledge that our students take away with them from this day is invaluable. Thank you. It does take a village to raise a child. Thank you for making that ever so true, KU.

Patricia Salvatore,

Lawrence
