Boards to discuss new subdivision regulations
City commissioners want to have another detailed discussion about a new set of regulations that will determine how developments can happen outside the city limits.
Commissioners at a Monday afternoon study session agreed to invite the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission and the Douglas County Commission to the Nov. 28 City Commission meeting.
The three boards will discuss the proposed subdivision regulations. The regulations would eliminate the 5-acre exemption, which is the current rule that generally allows people to build a home on 5 acres or more without going through the planning process.
The new regulations would require landowners to draw up plans for how the property would develop in the short term and long term.
But landowners would not have to go before the Planning Commission or County Commission to receive approval to build a home. Instead, they would go through an approval process with Lawrence-Douglas County planning staff.
