KBI still working on shooting report

Lawrence Police say they haven’t yet given prosecutors their report on a fatal Sept. 24 police shooting because they’re waiting on information from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Initially, police said they anticipated a full report on the shooting of Marsha Mace would be sent to Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office within two weeks.

Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Dan Ward said the department had finished its portion of the investigation but was waiting for supplements from the KBI.

The KBI analyzed forensic evidence after the shooting, KBI spokesman Kyle Smith said. He said a detailed update on the status of the KBI’s portion of the investigation wasn’t available Tuesday.

Police have said they believe the shooting was justifiable, saying that Mace was suicidal and came out of a trailer at 110 N. Mich. firing at officers before she was shot and killed.

Branson’s staff will review the file to determine if the shooting was justifiable. If there are unanswered questions, he can impanel a group of people for a “coroner’s inquest.”
