Rule of law

To the editor:

On Sunday, White House spokesman Tony Snow gave a moving, accurate dissertation as to why Saddam Hussein’s sentence and trial were important, not because of the sentence itself, but because the Iraqis had demonstrated that he is subject to the “rule of law” in an “independent judiciary,” that “due process” was followed and that “even a man like Saddam Hussein” has full access to the automatic right of appeal.

Too bad the White House does not feel obliged to apply those rights and procedures to this country, and, in particular, to the inhabitants of Guantanamo Bay.
