False idols
To the editor:
I appreciate the Journal-World Faith Forum Section.
This past Saturday you interviewed pastors from two large churches in Lawrence on the topic of how our hobbies can become a form of worship of false idols. I read both of these articles with interest.
What struck me the most from these two pastors was their lack of ability or willingness to direct readers to scripture in the Bible regarding this topic. The Bible has much to say regarding idols, yet to a new Christian or someone interested in the Bible, these two pastors offered nothing but opinions.
I am no preacher at all; in fact, I am a sinner who seeks forgiveness through the grace of God and the faith in His son Jesus Christ. Every chance a Christian has to offer the teachings of Christ, it should be done. So I would like to fill in the blanks left by the two pastors.
The Bible has much to say about idols, and I suggest you find one with a concordance and it will guide you to many of the verses. The one that I read was in the book of Jeremiah, Chapter 50, verse 38 that says, “A drought is against her waters, and they will be dried up. For it is the land of carved images, And they are insane with their idols.”
But more importantly, if you happen to be looking, seek a church and pastor who can help you understand what this means.
Dan Eyler,
Lawrence
