To the editor:

Would the mayor of Lawrence or some city commissioner explain to the public what the choices are regarding the library issue and not waste time talking about power plants in western Kansas?

The library has an online survey, and question number one is: Do you favor an expanded or new library downtown? We are not illiterate! This is two questions. Why are we not given the choice of (a) an expanded library at the present locations or (b) a new library at a different location.

Why, I ask, is it necessary to do away with the present building as a library? For a city that proclaims to save building after building, why not start with the Lawrence Public Library building at Seventh and Vermont? It is a well-designed building that could be easily expanded to the west, the main level only.

If computers are the issue, then place some at various sites around town. The patrons I have visited with would gladly go to a different site. Many patrons in town favor auxiliary sites with meeting rooms.

The woodwork in the building can be refinished, the landscaping improved and the bathrooms upgraded. Tile does wonders as does soap and water.

Forty percent off is a bargain? Thirty million dollars is ridiculous. The voters should have a choice of dictating that no more than $5 million be spent on upgrades at the present building.

Please, no dog and pony show on the library – we already saw one for city manager.
